Description

A pair of English porcelain or bone china presentation mugs dating to the mid-19th century. The first mug is of footed form with an ornate scrolled handle, featuring a magenta ground and a central white reserve framed by gilded scrollwork. It bears a hand-lettered inscription in black script reading Thomas Shingler Upton born May 13th 1854. The second mug is of cylindrical form with a simple loop handle and a white glazed ground. It features a hand-lettered gilded inscription reading Britton Field February 27th 1860, framed by decorative gilded flourishes. Both items are characteristic of the personalised giftware produced in the Staffordshire potteries during the Victorian era. No manufacturer marks are present.
