A Pair of South Indian Carved Wood Figures of Vishnu Durgai
Description
A pair of hand-carved wooden figures representing the deity Vishnu Durgai, a form of the goddess Durga associated with Vishnu. Each figure is depicted standing on a circular integrated plinth. The figures are four-armed, with the upper hands holding the shanka (conch) and chakra (discus), which are traditional attributes of Vishnu. They are rendered with tall, tiered conical headdresses known as kirita-makuta, characteristic of South Indian Dravidian artistic traditions. The figures are adorned with carved jewellery including necklaces and armbands. The wood has been treated with a dark surface stain. One figure bears a rectangular white adhesive label on the base with the handwritten characters 9630 and P.
Height: 25 cm.
