Description

This sculpture is a patinated plaster figure of a young boy, executed in a realist genre style. The figure is depicted barefoot, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, a double-breasted waistcoat with textured buttons over a collared shirt, and knee-length breeches. The hands are positioned in a manner suggesting the figure may have originally held an object, such as a cigarette, which is consistent with similar genre figures of the period. The work is finished with a golden-bronze tone patina to simulate the appearance of cast metal and is set upon an integral, textured rectangular plinth base. No signatures, foundry marks, or edition numbers are visible on the base or body of the piece. The style and subject matter resemble genre figures produced by makers such as Friedrich Goldscheider or Jose Cardona.
Approximate height: 60 cm.

Condition report:

The sculpture is in fair condition. A significant horizontal crack is present encircling the neck, with evidence of an old, partial repair and associated material loss to the patinated finish. There is general rubbing and minor chipping to the surface throughout, with more pronounced wear and finish loss along the edges of the base.
