A late Victorian sterling silver four-piece tea and coffee service by Mappin and Webb, Sheffield 1897
Description
A late Victorian sterling silver four-piece tea and coffee service in the George III revival style, manufactured by Mappin and Webb. The set comprises a coffee pot, teapot, twin-handled sugar bowl, and cream jug. Each vessel features a lobed, rectangular body with fluted corners and gadrooned decoration to the lower half. The coffee pot and teapot are fitted with ebonised wood scroll handles and matching finials to the hinged lids. The sugar bowl and cream jug are designed with angular silver handles and gilt-washed interiors. All pieces bear a clear set of British hallmarks including the maker mark M & W for Mappin and Webb (John Newton Mappin and George Webb), the lion passant for sterling silver, the crown for the Sheffield Assay Office, and the lowercase date letter e for 1897.
