French School, 19th Century, 'Portrait of a Young Lady with a Bouquet'
Description
A portrait miniature executed in watercolour and gouache on a flat support, depicting a young woman in 18th-century style attire. The subject is presented in a three-quarter view, wearing a large plumed hat and a white ruffed collar, and is shown holding a small bouquet of flowers. The artwork is contained within an oval gilt-metal frame, which features a beaded inner edge and is surmounted by a decorative ribbon-bow cresting. A white adhesive label with the handwritten digits 6182 is affixed to the upper left side of the frame. The piece is set under glass. The style of the portrait and the construction of the frame suggest a 19th-century revival of the Neoclassical tradition.
