French School, 19th Century, 'Portrait of a Lady'
Description
An oval portrait miniature executed in watercolour on ivory, depicting a woman in late 18th-century style dress. The subject is portrayed with powdered, high-piled hair, wearing a pearl necklace and a white gown with lace detailing against a pale blue background. The miniature is housed in a simple oval gilt-metal frame, possibly brass or gilt-copper, with a convex glass cover and a suspension loop at the top. The verso consists of a plain, solid metal backing with no maker’s marks, gallery labels, or stamps. No signature, date, or inscriptions are visible on the face of the painting. A white adhesive lot tag numbered 6182 is present on the glass.
