Description
This George II sterling silver two-handled cup, also known as a loving cup or porringer, is of classic mid-18th-century form. The vessel features a bell-shaped body divided by a central moulded girdle and is flanked by two S-scroll handles with scrolled thumbpieces. The cup sits upon a stepped, circular spreading foot. The body is struck with a clear set of hallmarks including a lowercase letter u in a shield with a pointed base for 1755, a lion passant in a clipped rectangular shield for sterling silver, a crowned leopard’s head for the London assay office, and the maker’s mark I.E attributed to John Edwards II.
