A Collection of Blue and White and Gilt-Decorated Ceramic Tablewares
Description
A collection of mixed ceramic tablewares comprising fine earthenware and porcelain items. The group includes a large circular twin-handled covered tureen and cover, surmounted by a gilt finial, resting on a wide circular underplate. The tureen and lid are decorated with an intricate all-over gilt honeycomb or oculus pattern over a white ground, finished with heavy gilt banding to the rims and finial. The underplate features a wide border in an underglaze blue and white geometric diaper pattern. Also included is a lobed quatrefoil-shaped serving tray decorated with underglaze blue transfer-printed floral sprays, and a small circular side plate featuring a traditional Willow pattern in underglaze blue. The collection is completed by a group of handled cups in demitasse and teacup styles, featuring underglaze blue borders with gilt-lined rims. A small adhesive inventory label with the handwritten digits 9627 is present on the lid of the tureen. The items are in various styles common to late 19th and early 20th-century British ceramic production.
