A Collection of White Kaolin Clay Tavern Pipes
Description
A collection of white kaolin clay smoking pipes, primarily of a short-stemmed tavern style. The pipes are manufactured from unglazed white clay and feature various embossed designs, including scrolling leaf and floral motifs on several of the bowls. Visible markings include the numbers 1, 7, and 4 incised on one bowl, the characters T and W positioned on either side of the spur of another, and a single letter B on a third pipe. The forms and decorative elements are consistent with the Old German clay pipe style, resembling examples produced by makers such as Bishop and Knight. The lot is presented on a dark wood-effect tray which bears a small white adhesive label with the handwritten characters 3, 6, and 7.
