Description

A late 19th-century Victorian mahogany tub chair of traditional captain’s form. The chair features a horseshoe-shaped wrap-around backrest with an upholstered top rail, supported by a gallery of finely turned spindles. The arm terminals are finished with carved volutes. The curved seat frame is supported by ring-turned, fluted, and tapered front legs, while the rear legs are of swept square-section form. The piece is finished with original brass cap castors. The construction is solid mahogany throughout with mortice and tenon joinery, displaying the characteristic dark finish of the period. No maker’s marks or labels are present. This style of chair was popularised in the late 19th century for use in libraries, offices, and clubs. 80cm H x 62cm W x 58cm D.
