Description

A monumental Jacobean Revival style sideboard dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, constructed from solid oak with a dark stained finish. The upper hutch features a multi-tiered arrangement with a prominent gadrooned cornice, supported by substantial bulbous cup and cover turned posts. The central section of the hutch contains a small cupboard with twin leaded glass doors featuring stylised foliate motifs. The back panels and drawer fronts are heavily decorated with recessed diamond-patterned carvings, floral scrolls, and foliate borders. The lower section comprises two drawers with hand-carved lion’s mask pulls above a cupboard base. The piece reflects the Victorian fascination with the English Renaissance, utilising traditional motifs to create a grand domestic statement. No maker’s marks are present. Dimensions: 210cm H x 150cm W x 55cm D.

Condition report:

The piece is in fair condition overall but requires restoration. There is a significant loss to the lower right-hand section where a cupboard door or decorative panel is missing. Surface wear is evident throughout, including scratches, abrasions to the finish, and minor chips to the carved elements. The leaded glass remains in good order. Hardware is a combination of original carved oak and later cast metal fittings.
