Lot 58:
Soviet School, Set of Six Matryoshka Nesting Dolls, Painted Wood, circa 1960-1980
Description
Produced by an unidentified Soviet workshop, this set of six hand-painted nesting dolls (matryoshka) is crafted from turned wood. Each figure depicts a traditional peasant woman wearing a colourful kerchief and apron decorated with red and green floral motifs. The facial features and clothing outlines are defined through a combination of black paint and pyrography (wood-burning), with the largest doll featuring a distinctive spiral-patterned hair motif. No maker’s marks or Cyrillic signatures are present; however, the largest figure retains an adhesive auction label numbered 6182. This set is a typical example of mid-to-late 20th-century Russian folk art production from the USSR. Dimensions: Height of largest doll 15 cm.
Condition report:
The set is in fair condition, consistent with age and use. There are minor paint abrasions and surface scuffing to the exterior. Small nicks are visible on the wooden surfaces, particularly at the bases of the smaller figures. The nesting function remains intact and the wood shows no significant splitting.
