Modern Russian, Seven-piece Matryoshka Nesting Doll Set, Pyrography and Hand-painted Wood, Late 20th/Early 21st Century
Description
A set of seven graduated Russian nesting dolls (matryoshka) of modern production, dating from the late 20th or early 21st century. Each figure is expertly crafted from turned wood, featuring a decorative scheme that utilises pyrography (wood-burning) to define the outlines. The dolls are further embellished with hand-painted accents in white, gold, and silver pigments, set against a natural wood finish. The figures depict stylised women with blue eyes and fair hair, each wearing a traditional headscarf and a dress adorned with a large central floral motif and geometric borders. No Cyrillic signatures, hallmarks, or maker’s marks are present on the exterior or interior surfaces. The largest doll bears an adhesive inventory label numbered 2819. Dimensions: Largest doll height approximately 17 cm.
Condition report:
The set is in excellent overall condition, showing no significant signs of wear, cracking, or loss to the pigment. The wood-burned details remain crisp and the painted highlights are well-preserved. The nesting mechanism functions correctly for all pieces.
