Lot 3:
A Pair of Late Victorian Ash and Elm Hoop-Back Windsor Side Chairs
Description
This pair of late 19th or early 20th-century side chairs is designed in the traditional Windsor style, featuring steam-bent hoop backs and vertical spindles. Each chair incorporates a decorative pierced central splat with a circular motif. The construction utilises solid elm for the contoured saddle seats, showcasing a prominent and attractive grain, while the hoops and spindles are fashioned from ash. The chairs are supported by ring-turned legs united by an H-stretcher, a classic feature of vernacular English furniture design. The dark-stained finish enhances the natural timber grain. No maker’s marks or labels are present. Dimensions: H 88 cm x W 42 cm x D 44 cm.
Condition report:
The chairs are structurally sound. The dark-stained finish exhibits age-appropriate wear, including surface scuffs, scratches, and minor finish loss concentrated on the seat edges and the back hoops. There are no visible signs of active woodworm or major structural repairs.
