Description

This late 19th or early 20th-century side chair is a refined example of Neoclassical design in the Empire Revival style. The frame is constructed from hardwood with a rich mahogany finish, featuring a tall, slender backrest surmounted by turned ball finials. The back stiles are inset with two circular medallions featuring carved fan or shell motifs, flanking a central upholstered rectangular panel. The seat and back are upholstered in a navy blue fabric adorned with embroidered gold-tone laurel wreaths and anthemion patterns, finished with a coordinating gimp trim. The chair is supported by square-section legs joined by a robust H-stretcher and an additional low rear stretcher, ensuring structural stability. This piece reflects the eclectic historical revivalism prevalent during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. No maker’s marks are present, though an auction lot tag is visible on the back rail. Dimensions: 96cm H x 46cm W x 44cm D.

Condition report:

The chair is in good structural condition with firm joints. The mahogany finish shows minor age-appropriate wear, including light surface scuffs and small nicks to the legs. The upholstery remains clean and the embroidery is intact with no significant fraying. No evidence of woodworm or major repairs.
