Lot 21:
Early 20th Century Edwardian Revival Oak Hexagonal Occasional Table
Description
This Edwardian period occasional table dates to the early 20th century and is a fine example of historical revivalism. The piece is constructed from solid oak throughout, featuring a dark-stained finish that emphasises the prominent grain of the timber. The design comprises a two-plank hexagonal top with a bevelled edge, supported by three characteristic bobbin-turned legs. These legs are secured by a shaped Y-stretcher base, a construction detail that ensures structural rigidity while maintaining the aesthetic of 17th-century turnery. While the form is reminiscent of Italian walnut designs of the same period, the use of solid oak and the specific turnery suggest an English or Northern European origin. No maker’s labels or stamps are present. Dimensions: H 62cm x W 48cm x D 42cm.
Condition report:
The table is in a structurally sound condition. The dark finish shows age-appropriate surface wear, including light scratches and small nicks to the edges of the hexagonal top. There is minor finish loss and rubbing to the high points of the bobbin-turned legs and the stretcher base. No evidence of woodworm or previous structural repairs is visible.
