Description

A fine late 19th-century Victorian armchair in the Renaissance Revival taste, constructed from solid walnut with a rich aged patina. The imposing high backrest is surmounted by an elaborate pierced cresting rail featuring central shell and acanthus leaf motifs, flanked by uprights decorated with carved floral bosses. The padded armrests terminate in deeply carved scrolled foliate motifs, supported by substantial front legs with block and turned detailing. The chair is upholstered in a dark green fabric, with the backrest displaying a floral vine tapestry pattern and the seat featuring a central needlepoint floral motif, all bordered by decorative gimp trim. This piece exemplifies the historicist styles popular in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States during the mid-to-late 19th century, often associated with prominent cabinetmakers of the era. The construction features traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery consistent with the period. Dimensions: 115cm H x 65cm W x 60cm D.

Condition report:

The chair remains in sound structural condition with joints appearing secure. The walnut frame exhibits an attractive aged patina with minor surface abrasions, small nicks, and wear consistent with its age and use. The upholstery is well-preserved with no significant tears or staining, though the fabric is a later addition. No visible signs of active woodworm or major structural restoration are present.
