Steiff Vintage Mohair Jointed Teddy Bear with Metal Button-in-Ear, Circa 1950s
Description
This vintage teddy bear is a quintessential example of mid-20th-century craftsmanship by the esteemed German manufacturer, Steiff. Constructed from honey-coloured mohair plush, the bear features a traditional five-way jointed body, allowing for movement of the head and limbs. The facial expression is defined by hand-stitched black embroidery for the nose and mouth, complemented by small, dark inset eyes. A defining feature is the original gold-toned metal button located in the left ear, a hallmark of the brand’s heritage. The bear is finished with felt paw pads and is likely stuffed with traditional wood wool, typical of the 1950s production period. This model represents the enduring appeal of the Steiff Original Teddy design. Height: Approximately 8 inches.
Condition report:
The bear is presented in fair vintage condition, showing signs of significant play-wear consistent with its age. There is prominent thinning and balding of the mohair plush, most notably on the abdominal region, limbs, and the area surrounding the ear button. The felt paw pads remain intact but exhibit age-related discolouration and light surface marks. While the metal ear button is present, the associated yellow cloth identification tag and the paper chest tag are no longer attached. The internal jointing mechanism remains in good working order.
