Lot 356:
VARIOUS], Le Petit Echo de la Mode and a Collection of Victorian Fashion Prints, Periodical Issues, c. 1895-1896
Description
A collection of late 19th-century French fashion periodicals and associated decorative prints, primarily focusing on Victorian-era attire and portraiture. The lot includes several original issues of Le Petit Echo de la Mode, published by Bureaux du Journal, Paris, with visible dates including 7 July 1895 and 21 June 1896. These folio-sized unbound periodicals feature illustrated covers showcasing Belle Epoque high fashion, including a prominent issue featuring a Corsage de satin with leg-of-mutton sleeves and another featuring elaborate Toilette de mariee (bridal gowns). Illustrations are tinted or hand-coloured. The collection also includes a La Grisette full-length engraved fashion plate; a large colour lithograph or hand-coloured photographic portrait of a woman in a high-necked black lace bodice with a gold watch chain, mounted on board; and a colour print of a young girl in an oval-cut card mount.
Condition report:
The collection is in aged condition, typical for paper ephemera of this period. The periodicals show significant age-related toning and yellowing of the newsprint-quality paper, with visible foxing and spotting on several covers. Edges show expected wear, including fraying, small tears, and minor creases. The La Grisette print has significant toning and light foxing to the margins. The large portrait plate shows surface wear, edge scuffing, and minor losses to the corners of the mount. The oval portrait exhibits notable toning and surface staining. Most items are currently housed in modern plastic protective sleeves. Professional stabilisation is recommended for the most fragile pieces.
