Large Italian Renaissance Revival Maiolica Ewer, Inscribed Faenza, 19th Century restoration needed see images Category: Ceramics
Description
A large Italian Renaissance Revival maiolica ewer, likely dating to the late 19th century. This hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware vessel features an ovoid body decorated with dense blue and white foliate scrollwork. A central white banner is inscribed with the word FAENZA in capital letters, referencing the historic centre of Italian ceramic production. The ewer is further distinguished by a sculptural, polychrome handle modelled in the form of a winged serpent or chimera. The piece sits upon a spreading circular foot finished with an ochre-coloured border. The underside of the foot remains unglazed, showing the buff-coloured earthenware body. Height: approximately 52 cm.
Condition report:
The ewer exhibits a significant structural break at the junction of the neck and the body, which has been stabilised with a visible adhesive repair. There are several chips and losses to the flared rim and the spout. The foot rim shows multiple small chips and losses to the glaze and ceramic body. General surface wear and minor abrasions consistent with age and handling.
