Lot 283:
A Collection of Mid-20th Century Decorative Ceramics including a Sarreguemines Majolica Wall Mask and WWII Propaganda Novelty Ware Category: Ceramics
Description
This assorted collection of mid-20th-century ceramic and porcelain wares features a prominent French Sarreguemines majolica wall mask. The mask depicts a characterful man in a black top hat with a high-gloss glaze and moulded details, typical of the factory’s grotesque and character series. Also included is a hand-painted figurine of an artist seated upon a palette-shaped base, alongside two miniature creamers—one decorated with blue transfer-printed scrolls and the other with a hand-painted holly and berry motif. Of particular historical interest is a WWII-era novelty porcelain cup or ashtray, featuring an orange-painted rim and an interior caricature with the anti-Nazi slogan Flip your ashes on old nasty. The collection represents a mix of European decorative styles and mid-century novelty items. Wall mask measures approximately 20 cm in height.
Condition report:
The Sarreguemines wall mask exhibits visible surface crazing throughout the glaze, which is characteristic of majolica of this period. A small adhesive label is present on the top hat. The artist figurine shows minor wear to the overglaze enamel and paint. The miniature jugs and novelty cup appear in generally good order with only light surface abrasions and minor shelf wear to the bases.
