Lot 279:
A Japanese Meiji Period Celadon Glazed Porcelain Barbotine Vase Category: Art Nouveau & Art Deco
Description
A small Japanese porcelain vase from the Meiji period (1868-1912), featuring a pale celadon green glaze. The body is decorated with elaborate applied high-relief barbotine floral motifs, depicting blossoms in shades of pink and white with verdant green foliage. The design is further enhanced with hand-painted accents and traces of gilding, reflecting the organic influence of the Art Nouveau style. The underside reveals an unglazed circular foot with an impressed oval maker’s mark containing Japanese characters. A small black circular plug is inserted into a drilled aperture on the lower side of the body, suggesting the piece was previously adapted for use as a lamp base. Height: approximately 13 cm.
Condition report:
The vase exhibits signs of age-related wear, including surface soiling and rubbing to the gilded highlights. There are minor losses to the delicate raised elements of the barbotine decoration. A hole has been drilled near the base for electrical conversion, which is currently filled with a plug. No major cracks or structural repairs are evident.
