Description
A hand-carved wooden sculpture of a bear, known as Kibori Kuma, originating from the Ainu folk art tradition of Hokkaido, Japan. The figure is expertly rendered in a dynamic, crouching pose with its head turned, clutching a salmon in its jaws. The piece displays characteristic deep, rhythmic gouge-work to simulate the texture of thick fur, while the fish features fine detailing to the scales and fins. The sculpture is finished in a dark brown stain over a lighter wood body, creating a multi-tonal effect. This style of woodcarving gained prominence during the Showa period as a celebrated regional craft. An auction label numbered 6182 is present on the bear’s back. Length: approximately 18 cm.

The piece is in need of restoration , exhibiting minor surface wear and light scuffing consistent with age and handling.
