Description

A fine cased pair of Art Deco sterling silver-mounted gentleman’s hair brushes, each featuring sophisticated engine-turned geometric decoration. The rectangular mounts are designed with elegant canted corners, centering a rectangular cartouche engraved with a stylized S monogram, identified as a Singer brush set. The silver mounts are struck with British hallmarks to the side, including the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, and the maker’s mark H.C. & S. The brushes are fitted with natural bristles set into wooden bases and are presented in their original silk and velvet-lined fitted case. The interior of the lid bears the gold-blocked retail stamp for Fillans & Sons, Watchmakers & Jewellers, Market Walk, Huddersfield. This set exemplifies the refined grooming accessories of the early 20th century Art Deco period. Brushes: 115mm x 65mm. Case: 175mm x 145mm.

Condition report:

The silver mounts exhibit a heavy iridescent tarnish and a natural aged patina throughout. There are minor surface scratches and tiny nicks consistent with age and use. The natural bristles remain in generally good condition and are firmly set into the wooden bases. The original presentation case shows external wear and scuffing to the covering; the cream-coloured satin lining displays foxing and age-related staining, though the structural integrity and hinges remain sound.
