Lot 227:
United Kingdom, Home Front and RAF Service Medals and Insignia, circa 1935-1955
Description
This lot comprises a diverse collection of British mid-20th-century service medals, insignia, and personal accoutrements, primarily focusing on Home Front organisations and the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War and the immediate post-war period. The collection includes a Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS) Long Service Medal in its original green presentation case, featuring the stylized WVS monogram and the original red, white, and green ribbon. Also present are two British Red Cross Society (BRCS) awards: a For Merit Medal featuring three dated bars for 1935, 1936, and 1937 with a white enamel Service cross, and a large gilt Proficiency Medal. Insignia includes a variety of Girls’ Life Brigade (GLB) enamel badges, a silver-toned WVS Civil Defence badge, and a boxed Civil Defence Corps enamel badge. The RAF is represented by a large gilt brass wreathed eagle cap badge and a significant quantity of brass uniform buttons. Personal equipment includes a boxed Suprex mechanical map measurer (opisometer) and a gold-toned sweetheart-style stamp case with an applied miniature RAF wings insignia. These items represent the varied contributions of both civilian volunteers and military personnel during the mid-century era.
Condition report:
The items are in generally good vintage condition. The enamel on the various badges remains largely intact with only minor surface wear and no significant chipping. Medals exhibit light patination consistent with their age. Ribbons are present and structurally sound, though they show minor fading. The original cardboard boxes for the WVS medal, Civil Defence badge, and Suprex map measurer show shelf wear and some structural softening. The stamp case has minor scuffing to the gilt finish. While no naming is visible on the obverse of the medals, the rims and reverses have not been fully inspected; BRCS medals from this period are frequently engraved with the recipient\'s name, offering potential for further historical research. All items appear to be genuine period examples.
