Lot 21:
Early 20th Century Anglo-Indian Hand-Carved Sheesham Folding Occasional Table
Description
An early to mid-20th century Anglo-Indian occasional table, expertly crafted from solid sheesham, a dense reddish-brown hardwood. The piece is designed in two parts, featuring a circular removable top and a folding tripod base. Both elements are densely decorated with hand-carved foliate and floral motifs, with the base panels exhibiting intricate pierced ajoure work. The construction utilises traditional slotted joints, allowing the base to fold flat for storage or transport. This style of furniture was a popular export item from Northern India, particularly the Saharanpur region, throughout the early to mid-20th century. No maker’s marks or labels are present. Dimensions: H 46 cm x W 45 cm x D 45 cm.
Condition report:
The table is structurally sound with the folding mechanism in good working order. The finish on the top surface shows some fading and minor wear consistent with age and use. There is an accumulation of dust within the deep recesses of the carving which would benefit from a light cleaning. No major losses or repairs are evident.
