Description

A substantial Late Victorian breakfront compactum wardrobe, circa 1890, expertly constructed from a light-toned oak with striking burr walnut veneer panels to the drawer fronts and cupboard doors. This architectural piece features a central section comprising a twin-door cupboard over a bank of five graduated drawers. The cupboard doors are intricately carved with recessed panels depicting foliate scrolls and classical urn motifs. This central unit is flanked by two full-length bevelled mirror doors which open to reveal generous hanging space, alongside further side drawer units. The entire structure is surmounted by a decorative swan-neck pediment with a central turned and carved finial. The wardrobe is fitted with its original ornate brass hardware, including decorative escutcheons and drop handles. The piece reflects the Renaissance Revival influence of the late 19th century, designed for both aesthetic impact and functional utility. Dimensions: H 238cm x W 215cm x D 62cm.

Condition report:

The wardrobe is in good structural condition, remaining solid and stable. The finish displays a rich, aged patination with minor surface wear, light scratches, and small abrasions consistent with age and use. The burr walnut veneers are well-preserved, with only very minor lifting and small losses to the edges of the drawer fronts. The bevelled mirror plates show some light foxing and silvering loss, particularly at the edges, which is typical for glass of this period. All brass hardware appears to be original and is securely attached. There is no evidence of active woodworm or significant historical repairs.
