Carved Wood, Folk Art Dog-Head Walking Cane, Late 19th/Early 20th Century
Description
This folk art walking cane features a handle hand-carved from wood in the form of a dogs head, likely a duck or waterfowl, with an L-shaped grip and inset black bead eyes. The shaft is formed from a single piece of natural, knotted wood, possibly blackthorn or a similar fruitwood, displaying a rustic character with various nodes and a slight taper. No hallmarks or maker’s marks are present. This is a standard decorative walking stick without hidden system features. Length approximately 36 inches.
Condition report:
The handle is in good antique condition with visible finish loss and minor surface checking; one inset bead eye is missing or deeply recessed. The shaft shows typical surface scuffing but retains its natural structural integrity. No ferrule is present at the tip.
