Lot 146:
Antique Silver-Plated Foliate Pommel Riding Crop, circa 1890-1910
Description
This antique riding crop is a classic example of late Victorian or early Edwardian equestrian equipment. It features a decorative cast metal pommel with a deeply embossed foliate and floral motif, showing a dark patina consistent with aged silver plate. The long, tapered shaft is finished in a dark, finely braided material, likely gutta-percha or treated leather, providing a textured grip. The crop terminates in a contrasting tan leather lash. While no hallmarks or maker’s marks are visible, the style and construction are characteristic of high-quality British sporting goods from the turn of the century. The item displays the elegant proportions favoured by riders of the period. Length: Approximately 71 cm (28 inches).
Condition report:
The item is in good antique condition, displaying signs of age and use consistent with its history. The metalwork shows significant tarnish and a dark patina, which has been left undisturbed. The braided shaft is intact with minor surface wear and a slight natural curve. The leather lash remains supple and appears to be an original or early replacement. A small white adhesive inventory label is present on the shaft near the handle. No structural damage or repairs are evident.
