Lot 105:
A Victorian English Beaded Needlepoint Circular Footstool
Description
A Victorian period circular footstool of English origin, circa 1870. The piece features a dark-toned carved wooden frame raised upon small integrated bun feet. The upholstered top consists of a hand-worked needlepoint panel on a neutral canvas ground, intricately decorated with a floral motif executed in multi-coloured glass beads. The design depicts a central rose and trailing foliage in shades of pink, white, green, and brown. This style of beadwork was a popular domestic handicraft during the mid-to-late 19th century, often used for small furniture accents. Diameter approximately 26 cm.
Condition report:
The item is in aged condition with significant structural and cosmetic issues. There is a large, full-thickness structural split to the circular wooden rim. The frame shows various surface abrasions, scuffs, and small losses to the timber. The beaded upholstery exhibits several areas of bead loss, particularly to the floral elements, and the underlying textile ground shows visible wear, thinning, and discolouration.
