Clark's Anchor, Cantilever Embroidery Floss Cabinet, Stained Hardwood and Glass, c. 1920s-1950s
Description
This original retail counter-top display unit was produced for Clark’s Anchor, a brand associated with J. & P. Coats. The cabinet is constructed from a stained hardwood featuring a hinged glass lid and metal cantilever hardware. The mechanical design allows the three tiered sections to swing outward simultaneously, providing easy access to the internal compartments organised for embroidery skeins. The front faces feature gold-leaf style serif typography reading CLARK’S ANCHOR and STRANDED COTTON FOR EMBROIDERY. This piece is a classic example of early-to-mid 20th-century retail merchandising. Dimensions: Approximately 17-18 inches in width.
Condition report:
The item is in good vintage condition with a characterful aged patina. The woodwork displays signs of age-appropriate wear, including surface scratches, minor scuffs, and small chips to the edges. The gold-leaf lettering remains legible despite some fading and rubbing consistent with its history as a retail fixture. The glass top is intact and free of cracks. All metal hardware, including the cantilever arms and pull-knobs, is functional but shows surface oxidation. This is an authentic period piece and not a modern reproduction.
