Lot 419:
A 19th Century Miniature Portrait of a Lady in a Highly Ornate Gilt-Metal Frame
Description
A single antique miniature portrait painting of a lady, executed on a light support, likely ivory or thin material. The style is consistent with the Regency or Romantic period, often marketed as a Victorian miniature painting. The bust-length subject has tightly curled hair and wears a bright blue jacket, a ruffled white ruff collar, and a dark hat adorned with a prominent yellow feather. The background is light blue. A faint signature, appearing to read Valiny or Valery, is visible on the background near the subject’s left shoulder. This piece has been associated with the keyword interpretation signed volnov. The oval miniature is set within a gilt metal bezel and mounted on a dark olive green matte board. The matte is decorated with applied gilt metal ornaments, including swags and rosettes. The entire assembly is housed in a rectangular gilt metal frame featuring detailed foliate scrolling and openwork extensions at the corners and base. A white adhesive sticker bearing the number 6182 is affixed to the green matte.
