A Columbia Portable 78 rpm Suitcase Phonograph, Early 20th Century
Description
A Columbia portable ‘suitcase’ style phonograph, designed for 78 rpm records, dating to the early to mid-20th century. It features a black, textured, faux leather or leatherette-covered wooden case with chrome or nickel-plated metal hardware, including external latches, hinges, a curved tonearm, and control knobs/levers. The visible record on the turntable bears a “REX” label, marked “BRITISH” and also appears to show “PURE” or “DURE” with other illegible text. The control panel includes a lever marked “FAST, ” “INT” (Intermediate), and “SLOW” for speed adjustment. A faded gold-colored emblem, possibly featuring musical notes, is present on the interior lid, and a small, rectangular blue and white badge with illegible text is affixed to the exterior top.
