A Pair of Late 19th/Early 20th Century Brass and Wood Postal Scales with Weights
Description
A pair of antique postal or letter scales, each featuring a polished wooden base and brass or bronze-toned metal mechanisms, pans, and corresponding weights. The left scale is presented on a dark rectangular wooden base and includes a set of circular brass weights, clearly marked ‘4 OZ’ and ‘8 OZ,’ alongside smaller examples. Its rectangular brass weighing pan is impressed with ‘RATES OF POSTAGE,’ specifying ‘INLAND LETTER POST’ charges such as ‘NOT EXCEEDING 1 OZ. 1D’ (one penny) and subsequent increments, indicative of a late 19th to early 20th-century period. A small, mostly illegible rectangular brass plaque is also present on this base. The right scale rests on a lighter, irregularly shaped wooden base and similarly holds multiple brass weights, with ‘8 OZ’ and ‘4 OZ’ visible on two examples.
