A Framed Set of World War One Embroidered Silk Postcards
Description
This framed textile artwork features an assemblage of nine embroidered silk postcards, commonly known as “sweetheart postcards,” dating to the World War I period. Each individual postcard is adorned with lace trim and fine embroidery, some incorporating beadwork, and depicting various motifs including national flags (e.g., US, UK), floral arrangements, landscapes, and military insignia. Visible inscriptions include “Souvenir of the Great War,” “To my Sweetheart,” “Sweetheart mine,” “A Kiss from France,” “In Memory of you,” the year “1918,” and the abbreviation “R.A.M.C.” (Royal Army Medical Corps). The postcards are set against a cream-colored satin or silk fabric backing and presented within a simple grey wooden frame.
