John Cother Webb after J.M.W. Turner, Caligula's Palace and Bridge, Hand-Coloured Mezzotint
Description
A large hand-coloured mezzotint by John Cother Webb, after the original painting by J.M.W. Turner entitled Caligula’s Palace and Bridge. The work depicts a grand classical landscape featuring ornate architectural ruins, a multi-arched bridge in the distance, and various figures and boats in the foreground set against a luminous sky. This impression is executed using the mezzotint process, providing soft tonal gradations, and is finished with hand-applied colour. A clear plate mark is visible around the perimeter of the image. The lower margin includes printed inscriptions and a circular blind stamp located in the lower right corner. The print is housed in a wide cream-coloured mount and set within a large, ornate gilt-wood frame featuring a beaded inner border.
