Description

A large Japanese porcelain charger decorated in the Imari palette, featuring underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red and green enamels, enriched with gilding. The composition centres on a circular medallion containing a stylized floral sprig in blue and red. The surrounding wide border is divided into six alternating panels. Three panels depict traditional motifs, including pine and bamboo in green and red enamels against a white ground. These alternate with panels of deep cobalt blue, each containing a white circular reserve decorated with floral sprays. The panels are partitioned by narrow borders of iron-red ground featuring white geometric diaper patterns. This piece was produced in Japan during the late 19th century for the export market. Two auction labels are present in the centre: a small circular handwritten label marked 501 and a rectangular label for Shelbys Auctioneers Lot 85. No maker marks are visible on the face of the charger.
