Lot 393:
A Victorian Swiss Marquetry Inlaid Burr Walnut Box
Description
A Victorian rectangular marquetry-inlaid burr wood box, featuring a central geometric star motif and corner fan inlays to the lid, set within cross-banded borders. The front panel is decorated with two diamond-shaped marquetry inlays, and the entire piece sits on a stepped wooden base. The interior is lined with dark blue velvet on the underside of the lid and a floral-patterned blue fabric in the base. It is fitted with brass hinges and a brass lock plate. A small brass plate is located on the interior rim of the lid with incised characters, which are not clearly legible. The decorative marquetry and form are characteristic of 19th-century Swiss manufacture, often associated with musical box cases.
Length: approximately 29 cm.
