Lot 390:
A Collection of Royal Doulton Dickens Ware Plates and Character Jugs
Description
This collection of British earthenware ceramics includes two plates from the Royal Doulton Dickens Ware series and three graduated character jugs. The plates are decorated with transfer-printed scenes and hand-painted highlights depicting characters from Charles Dickens novels against Victorian architectural backdrops. One plate is identified by a backstamp as The Fat Boy from The Pickwick Papers, bearing the pattern number D3010 and the Royal Doulton Dickens Ware circular mark with a central profile portrait. The second plate depicts a character in a green coat standing before a building marked Marine Store. The three graduated character jugs are moulded in the form of a weathered fisherman wearing a brown hat, with a leaping fish incorporated into the design to form the handle. These jugs are produced in the style of The Poacher, a design originally created by Max Henk for Royal Doulton, though no factory marks are visible on the bases of these specific examples. The jugs are hand-painted in a palette of browns, greens, and flesh tones with a gloss glaze finish.
Plate diameter: approximately 26.5 cm
Large jug height: approximately 17 cm.
