Two Victorian Porcelain Commemorative Christening Mugs
Description
Two mid-19th-century porcelain christening mugs, likely of Staffordshire origin. The first mug is of waisted form with a flaring pedestal base and a simple loop handle. It is decorated with wide copper-coloured lustre bands to the rim and base. The body features hand-painted script in a deep magenta pigment reading John Taylor Born March 1st 1851, surrounded by stylised floral and circular motifs. The second mug is of cylindrical form with a slightly flaring rim and a scroll handle. It features a hand-painted floral spray to the front, including a pink rose and orange fuchsias, with gilded bands to the rim and base. The body is inscribed in gilt script with the name Charles and a birth date partially obscured by a lot sticker, which includes the text born and 8th. No factory marks are present on the base of either item.
