A Pair of Mid-19th Century Staffordshire Graduated Ironstone Platters
Description
A pair of graduated oval ironstone earthenware platters featuring lobed and scalloped rims. The decoration consists of multi-colour transfer-printed Chinoiserie motifs. The central well of each platter depicts a landscape with a bridge, large peony-style blooms, bamboo, and scrolling foliage. The wide border is decorated with various floral sprays, including roses and chrysanthemums, set against a green cross-hatched textured ground. The base of one platter bears a green transfer-printed decorative scrollwork cartouche containing the letters Ma and the numbers 902. These pieces are characteristic of mid-19th-century British ceramic production from the Staffordshire region.
