Description

This lot comprises a collection of approximately twenty-two propelling and mechanical pencils alongside various personal accessories, primarily dating from the late 19th to the 20th century. The writing instruments include examples constructed from silver-toned metal, brass, wood, and celluloid. Decorative techniques observed include engine-turned patterns, fluted barrels, and chased floral scrolls. Notable examples include a white-metal pencil with a cast finial in the form of a seated dog, two miniature pencils featuring sky-blue guilloché and red marbled enamel decoration, and a wooden-barreled pencil with a carved hoof-form terminal. Several pencils are fitted with suspension rings for attachment to a chatelaine or chain. The personal accessories include a pair of gold-toned wire-rimmed spectacles contained within a black textured case with blue velvet lining, marked for the retailer Dipple and Conway, Ltd. 19, Petty Cury, Cambridge. Three powder compacts are included: a brass-toned circular example with a printed scene of swans, a gold-toned circular example with sunburst engine-turning and a central floral motif under glass, and a rectangular green-toned example with an applied floral and insect motif. The lot also contains a tortoiseshell-effect cigarette or card case with a triangular metal mount, a square silver-toned metal case with engine-turned decoration, and a spherical filigree metal object set with red cabochon stones.
