Description
A First World War Princess Mary Christmas 1914 gift tin of rectangular form with a hinged lid, constructed from embossed brass. The lid features a central profile portrait of HRH Princess Mary within a laurel wreath, flanked by two stylised M monograms. The design incorporates roundels containing the names of Allied nations: Japan, Russia, Monte Negro, Servia, France, and Belgium. A scroll to the left is inscribed Imperium Britannicum and a cartouche to the right is inscribed Christmas 1914. The background is decorated with embossed motifs including flags, bayonets, and warship bows. These tins were originally distributed to members of the British, Colonial, and Indian Armed Forces serving at the front or at sea on Christmas Day 1914.
