Description
A late 19th-century majolica earthenware surprise mug of tapered cylindrical form, featuring a rustic branch-moulded handle. The exterior is decorated with a textured sand or granite ground, embellished with high-relief sprigged oak leaves and acorns finished in green and brown glazes. The interior of the vessel contains a small, moulded green frog applied to the base, intended as a novelty surprise for the drinker. This specific combination of botanical relief and textured ground is characteristic of majolica produced by Minton. No maker marks are visible on the body or interior of the piece.
