Description

A pair of German porcelain cabinet plates, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Each plate is of circular form with a decorative scalloped rim. The central well of each plate features a portrait of a woman in a Romantic style, one depicting a woman with long dark hair and the other showing a woman with light brown hair. The portraits are rendered with soft, blended tones against a graduated background. The wide borders are finished in a deep cobalt blue ground, enriched with elaborate gilt decoration including multiple floral and foliate sprays and a continuous scrolling gilt border encircling the central portrait. The scalloped edges are further highlighted with a fine gilt line. On the reverse of the plates, there is a green printed mark consisting of a crown positioned above two crossed L characters, with the word VERSAILLES in capital letters and germany in lowercase. This mark was used by German porcelain decorators and manufacturers, such as E.A. Müller of Schwarzenbach, for export-quality wares produced in the Sèvres style. There are also hand-painted characters in blue, including the numbers 10 and 2, and a series of numbers in red-brown script which read 9212/1039.
Diameter: 24 cm.
