ATC Asahi Tinplate Champion Number 8 Indy Style Racing Car, Circa 1950s
Description
A vintage mid-century lithographed tinplate open-cockpit racing car manufactured by the Asahi Toy Company (ATC) of Japan. The vehicle features a vibrant red and cream colour scheme adorned with yellow and blue number 8 decals, stylised Champion script, and various racing motifs. The construction consists of a lithographed tin upper body joined to a pressed black tinplate chassis via visible assembly tabs. A painted plastic driver figure is seated in the cockpit behind a translucent plastic windshield. The car is fitted with four black rubber tyres on white metal hubs and features a friction-drive mechanism. The rear of the vehicle is clearly marked with the ATC trademark logo and MADE IN JAPAN. This model is a classic example of post-war Japanese toy manufacturing, reflecting the popular Indy-style racers of the era. Dimensions: Not recorded.
Condition report:
The item is in an honest, play-worn condition consistent with age. There are visible surface scratches, minor areas of oxidation, and paint loss concentrated along the seams and edges. The original plastic windshield remains intact but exhibits characteristic yellowing. The rubber tyres show signs of age but remain on the hubs. The lithography retains good colour density despite the play-wear. The internal friction mechanism is present but untested for functionality.
