Lot 339:
A Collection of Ten Vintage Reference Books and Hardback Volumes Including Harmsworth's Home Doctor
Description
A collection of ten vintage hardback reference books and volumes, primarily featuring a six-volume set of Harmsworth’s Home Doctor. These volumes are bound in olive green cloth with decorative gilt-stamped spines and titles in an Art Deco influenced style, characteristic of early 20th-century popular reference sets. The lot also includes a large Collins English Dictionary in black cloth, The New Standard Encyclopedia and World Atlas in a textured brown binding, a blue cloth-bound edition of the Daily Chronicle Everything Within, and a tan-coloured cloth volume titled The Story of Telford & Gibb. The collection showcases a variety of period binding techniques, including textured cloth and gilt-stamped decorative elements. Measurements: Largest volume 26 cm x 18 cm.
Condition report:
The collection exhibits varied condition consistent with age and frequent handling. There is visible shelf wear to all volumes, including scuffing to the cloth boards and bumping to the corners and spine ends. The tan-coloured volume shows significant surface staining and discolouration to the front cover. Some fading and rubbing to the gilt-stamped titles on the spines. The encyclopedia spine shows a small area of surface loss or residue. Internal pages show expected age-toning but remain generally clean. The set of Harmsworth’s Home Doctor appears complete in six volumes.
