Lot 290:
Bone Handled Walking Cane, Late 19th Century
Description
This antique walking cane features a smooth, ergonomically curved bulbous handle crafted from a natural organic material, highly polished dense bone, displaying a rich creamy-yellow patina and fine grain. The handle is joined to the shaft by a simple white metal collar, which appears to be aged silver or nickel silver; no hallmarks are present. The shaft is constructed from a straight, tapered hardwood with a medium brown finish and visible natural grain. This is a standard walking stick with no internal system features. Prospective buyers should be aware that international trade restrictions may apply if the material is confirmed as ivory. Length: 35 inches.
Condition report:
The item is in good antique condition. The organic handle displays fine, stable hairline cracks and surface wear consistent with age and natural dehydration. The wooden shaft shows typical signs of use, including light scuffs, minor scratches, and some finish loss, particularly towards the lower half. The base of the shaft shows wear indicative of regular use.
