A Pair of Cast brass Alloy Figures of Buda Category: Metalware
Description
A pair of cast metal figures depicting Budai, the Laughing Buddha, also known in Japan as Hotei. The larger figure is cast in a copper alloy, likely bronze, featuring a deep greenish-brown patinated finish and is presented on a separate tiered wooden base. The smaller figure exhibits a gold-toned or gilt surface and is detailed with an incised prayer bead necklace. Both figures are rendered in traditional seated postures with joyful expressions, characteristic of the deity associated with contentment and abundance. These pieces represent 20th-century decorative metalware inspired by traditional East Asian iconography. Larger figure: Width approximately 14 cm (5.5 inches).
Condition report:
Both figures exhibit surface wear, minor oxidation, and an accumulation of dust consistent with age. The larger figure shows significant verdigris-style patination and retains a small white inventory sticker to the torso. The smaller figure shows rubbing to the gilt surface. The wooden base shows minor scuffs and wear to the finish.
