Silver-Toned Metal Bird-Head, Bamboo Walking Cane, Late 19th/Early 20th Century
Description
This walking cane features a figural handle cast in the form of a bird head, likely a duck or heron, crafted from a silver-toned metal such as sterling silver or silver plate. The head is detailed with inset dark glass or stone eyes. The handle is mounted upon a natural bamboo shaft, which has been treated with a dark brown stain to accentuate the natural nodes. A decorative silver-toned metal collar is positioned approximately four inches below the handle. While no blade is visible in the provided images, the presence of this secondary collar is a characteristic feature of a system cane, specifically a sword cane. No hallmarks are visible on the metalwork. Length 35 inches.
Condition report:
The silver-toned handle and collar are in good condition, showing a natural aged patina and some surface tarnish. The bamboo shaft exhibits minor surface wear and small scuffs consistent with age. The handle is securely attached, and the ferrule shows standard wear.
